6633 Arctic Ultra
10th Edition of the 6633 Arctic Ultra
As one of the most respected extreme ultra marathons, the 6633 Arctic Ultra is regarded by many as the toughest, coldest, windiest ultra distance footrace on the planet. The 2018 event will be the 10th edition of the race. The non-stop self-sufficient foot race is over a distance of either 120 miles or 350 miles, with both races crossing the line of the Arctic Circle. The 120 mile race finishes at the First Nations Hamlet of Fort McPherson, whilst the longer 350 mile race continues to the banks of the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk.
What's so special about the 2018 edition: Well, for starters its the 10th edition, and everyone likes anniversaries.... but what's going to make the 2018 edition even more special is that the 350 mile event is going to be over a brand new course for the last 2/3 of the race, yet will still finish in the same place on the Arctic Ocean. From Fort McPherson the new route will now include 50% more Ice Road , much of which will wind its way through some incredibly stunning landscape, as it takes us via the First Nations village of Aklavik, and will also incorporate the brand new overland trail between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, which is equally stunning as it passes alongside a myriad of small lakes and between the famous pingos on the approach to the finish line. With it being a new route, there is also a new record to be set. Mimi Anderson was the very first person to cross the finish line in the races inaugural year back in 2007 and her record of 5 days 23 hours and 25 minutes will now stand forever.
Competitors will be expected to carry or pull on sleds all their provisions for the race including food, cooking items, clothing, sleeping kit and other safety gear. Racers going all the way to Tuktoyaktuk will be allowed 2 drop bags for limited essential gear at approx. 120 miles (Fort McPherson) and 265 miles (Inuvik). All racers will be allowed to have a bag at the finish line for spare warm clothing etc. Checkpoints will be spaced along the route at between 23 and 70 miles apart (exact distances wont be confirmed until after the recce later this year - once the rivers freeze again), where racers will be able to rest for a while and be able to prepare their own food. Hot water and Shelter are the only things guaranteed at the checkpoints.
The race is once again being organised by Martin from Likeys, together with the help of a super friendly, helpful and experienced support crew comprising individuals from the UK and Canada. In addition to having organised this event for the last 9 years, Martin has raced in Arctic conditions on many occasions and it is this combined experience that he brings to the 6633 Arctic Ultra to make it the most testing, rewarding memorable race that any self respecting ultra racer will ever do.
